Our History

First Ward Child Development was Established in 1999 as a part of the Hope 6 housing project with the Charlotte Housing Authority and HUD. We have a long time connection with the community in taking care of and teaching children.

The goal of the center is to serve as a mixed income program caring for children of all economic backgrounds near uptown Charlotte. We are proud to have celebrated 25 years of operation on Feb 1st 2024.

The staff of First Ward Child Development Center are educated and caring professionals who are dedicated to providing all children who come through our doors with the best possible start to their jurny of education.

Our director holds a Master Degree in Early Childhood Education from the University of Pittsburgh. The education of our staff covers a wide range of degrees from Masters to those just starting in the field.

About Our Programs

We offer four programs that serve a variety of educational needs.

Our Early Head Start Program Provides it’s students with a comprehensive start to education for children ages 6 weeks of age to 3 years of age. This program is funded by the DHHH and placement is done through Child Care Resources

The North Carolina Pre-K is offered for children who will be eligable for kindergarten the upcoming year. Placement for this program is through Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools

Our 3 and 4 year old Montessori Classes offer another dimension of education to our well-rounded center.

For Children who are not affiliated with these programs we have classes in all age groups. All of the above programs use the Creative Curriculum providing a continuum of philosophies in education.

In addition, we have before and after school services available as well as an excellant summer camp for school age children.
